Many fabric brands are now carrying their own solid fabrics to work with the other fabrics in their lines of quilting cottons. I think it’s a brilliant idea. However, not all solid fabrics are the same weight, texture, feel, etc.
Christie F found this article from “Stitched in Color” and thought it would be good to share with the rest of our readers. In this blog, Rachel Hauser lists the different solid fabric lines and compares them with each other. It’s an informative article, and we think you’ll find it helpful. Read “Comparing Quilting Cotton Solids”Rachel wrote this comparison in 2021, and since then, more lines of solid fabrics have been added to the quilting universe. This article will get you started and help you learn what you need to look for when choosing your solid fabric line.
Purchasing a “card” of swatches of all fabrics included in a solid quilting cotton line might be helpful to you. You can easily find them online; or I have found that the Hawthorne Supply Co carries a nice cross section of cards.

My favorite solid black fabric is from Keepsake Quilting – ‘Amish Black’. It’s very dark and the only black I’ll ever buy!
I have the Kona Card from Robert Kaufman and love it. There are so many swatches and it’s easy to find what I need. I enjoy the Kona Solids because of their “heft”.
Thanks, Christie, for passing on the article. I found the different weights per oz interesting. Good to know.
Very helpful article!!! I’m not generally a Solids type quilter, but at times I need them, and get very crazy trying to figure out why they are so many different weights, and different feels to the touch. Thank you for sharing this.
