Let’s Make Peace Cranes
for Ruthann
To show our appreciation to our outgoing chair person, Ruthann, let’s each make a paper-pieced Peace Crane block in blues and greens. Scroll down to find links to the diagram with instructions, as well as patterns for the 9″, 6″ or 3″ sizes of the block. As you can see, Marcia and Dianne have already tested these patterns.
For the background of these blue or green cranes, use only white or white-on-white fabrics. Please do not use cream, off-white or beige! To add the shading to your crane, pieces A2, B2 and D2 can be made in another darker fabric if you wish. Trim your block no smaller than 3.5″ square if making the 3 ” crane, 6.5″ square if making the 6” crane, and 9.5″ square if making the 9” crane. And you are encouraged/welcome to make more than one crane if you wish! Sign your block with a permanent quilt marking pen inside the seam allowance so it is visible once your block is stitched into the quilt.
Bring your completed blocks to our general meetings or other gatherings and surreptitiously give them to Ruth Turler. Or you can mail them to Ruth at: 4655 NE Killingsworth St, #30, Portland, OR 97218-1948. Please get them to Ruth by September 15 so they can be presented to Ruthann at the September meeting. Remember–THIS IS A SECRET!
Hints and Other Helpful Information
If you have never paper-pieced before or need a refresher course, Sam Hunter (our February General meeting presenter) has a great YouTube tutorial on Foundation Paper Piecing. You can find the link to that tutorial below.
When printing the PDF patterns, be sure to set your printer to ACTUAL SIZE or 100%. Do not use the “Fit” feature because your block will turn out too small.
The 3” crane is more difficult to make, so if you haven’t paper-pieced in awhile, start with the 6″ or 9” cranes!
Are you printing the pattern on regular copy paper? Before you piece the crane, take the extra few minutes to stitch on all the seam lines using a very SMALL stitch length and NO THREAD in the needle. You’ll be glad you did when the time comes to remove the paper.
If you don’t have a printer, let Ruth know. We’ll work to get you the patterns.
