Think of it: 21 independent quilt shops in Oregon banding together to offer a three-week “shop hop” across the western side of the state. Now that’s something to make quilters and fabric lovers smile in anticipation. The Harvest and Stitches Shop Hop runs Oct. 3 – 24, with each participating shop offering visitors a free pattern for a 6″ block plus the fabric to make the block. Additional incentives include chances to win a prize at each shop. MPS member Deb Messina, pictured at right, was instrumental in organizing the shop hop. Longtime MPS member Michelle Herrmann said her goodbyes a few days ago at the August guild meeting. She and her husband are moving to Seattle. Karla Alexander was the featured speaker at the July 28 MPS meeting. Karla, who lives in Salem, is a nationally known quilt designer, author, teacher, and designer of specialty rulers. Her patterns are available under the name Saginaw Street Quilt Company. MPS members were treated to a trunk show featuring many of the quilts pictured in her eight books, including her latest book Stack, Shuffle and Slide: A New Technique for Stack the Deck Quilts (That Patchwork Place, 2014).
