Whew! It’s been a busy summer.  Hard to believe it’s August already… MPS has been busy, too.  Here are a few things that are going on: WE HAVE A WINNER!! Yes, our UFO challenge ended at our July meeting and the winner of over $300 was new member, Teresa Koster.  She completed six projects to get her name in the hat six times.  We had 15 runners-up who also received nice prizes.  Congratulations to Teresa and to everyone who participated in this fun challenge.  It sounds like we’ll be doing this again next year, so you can start thinking about what you’ve got stashed awayRead More →

And we at MPS are very excited about it! Jacquie fell in love with quilting in 2009 after seeing an exhibit of the quilts of Gee’s Bend. Their quirky, almost modern sensibility appealed to her, so she dusted off the sewing skills her mother taught her and set about learning to quilt. Jacquie found the emerging modern quilting movement and worked to develop her own voice and style as a modern quilter. Many young girls (and a few boys) who grew up to be quiltmakers learned how to sew at the knee of their mother or grandmother. MPS member Deb Messina learned this valuable skill — among others — from her grandfather. “Growing up in my grandfather’s house, I learned how to frame roof rafters, mix concrete, change the oil in a car, and sew — all under his guidance,” recalls Deb. MPS will be featuring its annual Quilt College this coming Tuesday, May 24th, at 6:30 PM.  Our quilting professors are all lined up, and they have chosen their subject matter for the mini-courses.  The rest of us will be divided into four learning groups, and over the course of the evening, we will be given the opportunity to attend each class. This year, our teaching staff includes Judy Liebo, Marcia Sanderman, Bette King, and Carolyn Bahrman.
