At our Guild meeting this last January, Momoko Kanaoka spoke to us about Japanese textiles. Momo is the Product Designer and Production Manager at the Kiriko shop which is located in Portland’s Chinatown. You can visit the shop’s website here.
During her presentation, she showed us many interesting and beautiful Japanese fabrics and clothing. One amazing textile was dyed using a Shirbori method, and Momo had planned to show us a video on that technique. But we couldn’t connect to the internet in a timely fashion and had to move on.
All is not lost, however. Momo kindly sent me the link to her video so we could share it here.
This is not a great-quality video, but it’s short and will give you an appreciation of the process involved in the design of this fabric.
The following video is from the CBS Sunday Morning show, is higher quality, and shows the process and some of the results of Shibori dyeing.
Would you have the patience to create something like this?

Amazing! I love blue and white textiles, especially indigo, but now have a great appreciation for the Shibori artists and their work. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing results from this tedious process! Thank you for showcase it!
The video was great. Thank you for retrieving it for us. Rosalie
Thank you for following up on this presentation and the time you spend keeping us all informed.
