As we continue our 25th Anniversary celebration in March 2024, we’re going to reminisce about something we did as a guild many years ago.
The Quarterly Winnings block project was an opportunity to practice skills in making a wide variety of blocks. A committee chose a block, created a pattern and color suggestion and shared it with the members. Over the next three months, members made the blocks and brought them to the meeting. Those who made a block were eligible to “win” all the blocks to put together in a quilt.
It’s not exactly known when the Quarterly Winnings block projects began. Probably prior to 2003; however, the first documentation of the project in the Quarterly Winnings Notebook is 2003.
In the Notebook, the first recorded block was an appliqued fall leaf block. 48 blocks were received in fall colors on a neutral background. The blocks were won by Rita Rooks. Vickie Rooks, who is her daughter and an MPS member, does not recall if a quilt was made from them.
Our plan is to revisit the Quarterly Winnings project of the past, but with a twist. We’ve chosen a block that members can make that will be collected and made into a charity quilt or quilts. We want to take this a step further and challenge the group to delve into the more modern quilt world a bit more.
You’ll find instructions for these modern wonky blocks by clicking on the button below. We’ll be collecting these blocks over the next two months. You can bring them to a guild meeting, or you’ll find our address on the instruction sheet if you’d prefer to mail them to us. Not an MPS member? No problem! You can still participate if you’d like.
These blocks will be fun to make; and the more we make, the more charity quilts we’ll be able to put together. Win-Win!
